Jim O'lander is a former Jorran Special Forces operative, captured and tortured by the Mandalai and forsaken by the Jorran government. He quickly took over the Mandalai prison he was in, starting a prison riot and overwhelming the guards. The Warden, the man who would become Bluebeard joined forces with him and together, they founded the pirate clan known as The Masked Devils.

While Bluebeard was the leader of the clan, Jim and him were in fierce conflict, trying unsuccessfully to kill each other over a long period of time, long enough for Jim to reach well past his middle age. Eventually, utilizing a particularly chaotic raid and a naïve Mahoran passenger called Ira, Jim was able to escape the Masked Devils clan and start a new life on Ora Prime.

Though at first he was manipulating Ira, he eventually found himself falling in love with her. With her help, he changed his life considerably, founding a security company, which would later become the Apex Security Corporation, having children, and all seemed well.

In the background however, he was secretly scheming with his former military unit to take over the most powerful fleet in the Galaxy, the Arcana Corps and assassinate their leader, the King of Swords. His plan was to position his men and bait the King of Swords into attacking his brother in Solstern Space. Where Jim's former unit would stop him. Immediately after, he had his unit express their desire to join Arcana, which Arcana, witnessing their abilities firsthand, agreed to.

From within Arcana they quickly rose through the ranks, and finally, ambushed and assassinated the entire Swords family, taking up the mantle of Knaves. With Arcana under their control, Jim rejoined them (part time) to revel in the chaos they could cause, until eventually, all of the pirate clans targeted them at once, engaging in the battle that would end The Golden Age of Piracy, where Jim finally had a chance to fight and kill his long time nemesis Bluebeard and claim his head.

What happened next is not known, Jim disappeared for a time and then came back, this time a Lyr'aen, though it is unknown how. He was able to prove his identity to his family and resume his life where he left it off, founding The Tower of Babel with his children after his wife passed away, and beginning to seek champions for it.
